We invited participants, including the Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation Trust – Norfolk Recovery Partnershipto our Moving Pictures stop-motion Animation workshop in October (project funded by The Big Lottery Fund). The theme for the workshop was ‘Drink sensibly’ and how this can help mental wellbeing. This is one of the Mental Health Foundation’s ten ways on how to look after your mental health.

The workshop was delivered by Anastacia Tohill – Moving Pictures Tutor. Oliver Holgate from Norfolk Recovery Partnership Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation Trust supported the workshop leading on a discussion around the theme ‘Drink sensibly. Iain Mowat kindly volunteered and gave an inspirational talk about his experience. Massive thanks for their support on the day.

Feedback from animation workshop

“Enjoyed discussion on alcohol/drugs and having fun doing the planning and ideas”

“Thank you so much for a really enjoyable experience, brilliant tutor and workshop, I now know how to animate! So much fun, interesting, engaging, exciting!”

“Great fun and laughter as well as learning”

“Very enjoyable, thank you”

During the morning we took a brief look at the history of animation. To understand what stop-motion animation is participants had the opportunity to spin a Zoetrope and a Praxinoscope – an early animation device which creates the illusion of movement which demonstrates what stop motion is.

Iain gave an inspirational talk about his experience and then we discussed what the benefits of ‘Drinking sensibly’ were and explored this through discussion. After the discussion participants came up with ideas to create their animations.

Thanks to Iain Mowat who kindly volunteered and  Oliver Holgate from Norfolk Recovery Partnership Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation Trust who supported the workshop leading on a discussion around the theme ‘Drink sensibly.  The discussion with participants was based around the following information:

  • The effects of drinking too much and how this can affect our health.
  • Tips for drinking sensibly
Spread your drinking, have drink free days, no more than 14 units a week, have water between drinks. The risk of developing a range of health problems increases the more you drink on a regular basis. If you are pregnant you should not drink alcohol at all. Limit the amount of alcohol you drink in one session. Drink slowly and alternate with food and water.

Following the introduction to animation, discussion and storyboarding the participants from both groups created the following storyboards to help plan their story together.

A storyboard is a visual guide to help create the animation. This can be a rough visual representation of key moments within the story.

Below is a photo slide show which shows how participants from group 1 created their animation.

Before each moving pictures workshop, animation training is given to the member of staff and volunteer from the service which enables them to help support participants in the workshop with the tutor. See slide show below.

The training also involves discussing the workshop plan. Huge thanks to Iain Mowat and Oliver Holgate from Norfolk Recovery Partnership Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation Trust for creating the credits for the animation.

The Moving Pictures project uses the Mental Health Foundation’s ten ways on how to look after your mental health. This is what the Mental Health Foundation says about ‘Drink Sensibly’.

“We often drink alcohol to change our mood. Some people drink to deal with fear or loneliness, but the effect is only temporary.

When the drink wears off, you feel worse because of the way alcohol withdrawal symptoms affect your brain and the rest of your body. Drinking is not a good way to manage difficult feelings.

Apart from the damage too much alcohol can do to your body, you would need more and more alcohol each time to feel the same short-term boost. There are healthier ways of coping with tough times.

Occasional light drinking is perfectly healthy and enjoyable for most people.

Stay within the recommended daily alcohol limits:

  • 3 to 4 units a day for men.
  • 2 to 3 units a day for women.

Many people also smoke or use drugs or other substances to change how they feel. But, again, the effects are short-lived. Just like alcohol, the more you use, the more you crave. Nicotine and drugs don’t deal with the causes of difficult feelings. They don’t solve problems, they create them.” Quoted from MHF website.

“Thank you to everyone who came to the Moving Pictures workshop. I really enjoyed working with you all and I am always amazed at what is achieved in such a short period of time. I have found it really rewarding to see how well people have worked together during these workshops, their creativity and to see people enjoy themselves, smile and laugh. I hope you all continue to be creative.” Anastacia Tohill, Moving Pictures Animation Tutor.
